**Discovering a Home in London: My Journey and Reflections**

*By Harsh Gupta, MSc. Advanced Materials Science and Engineering*

Nine months ago, I relocated to London, and although that may not sound like a lengthy period, I’ve gained a wealth of knowledge about residing in this vibrant city. London boasts a rich diversity not only in its inhabitants and culture but also in its housing alternatives. Students are presented with numerous options, ranging from university accommodations to private rentals, including ensuite rooms, shared apartments, studio flats, and house shares. While domestic students can easily manage in-person viewings, international students often turn to platforms like Rightmove, Zoopla, and SpareRoom, which offer virtual tours, information on amenities, and access to public transport.

### Selecting the Ideal Location

In my accommodation search, I focused on finding a place in Central London to stay close to major attractions, bustling social areas, and, importantly, the Imperial College campus. The city is organized into six zones, with the most central being zones one and two. London’s comprehensive public transport system—comprising the Underground (Tube), buses, and trains—facilitates easy commuting. However, travel expenses can accumulate rapidly, with inter-zonal fares costing up to £5.25 daily. To cut costs, I chose to walk shorter distances instead of always relying on public transport. Luckily, discounts with the Oyster card help lower commuting costs for students.

Besides the Tube, the London Overground and National Rail services extend outside central zones, providing additional transport choices. However, fares can differ based on distance and train operators. Living in Central London may come with a hefty price tag, but I was fortunate to share accommodation with a friend, which notably reduced our rent. I also preferred residing in intercollegiate student housing since it allowed me to connect with peers from varied backgrounds—something private rentals might not easily facilitate.

### Accessibility to Essentials

For me, being close to grocery stores was crucial. Some of the more popular supermarket chains in London include Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Co-op, while budget-friendly options like Aldi, Lidl, and Iceland provide more economical choices. Having essential shops and pharmacies nearby is incredibly beneficial, especially during hectic exam seasons when every minute counts.

### Discovering London’s Varied Communities

Selecting a neighbourhood in London can be complex, given the city’s wealth of cultural communities. Many international students gravitate towards areas that echo the familiarity of their home nations. For example:

– **Southall (West London)** – Renowned for its sizable South Asian community, this area brims with Indian restaurants, grocery stores, and traditional clothing shops.
– **Brixton (South London)** – A lively neighbourhood celebrated for its Afro-Caribbean culture and music scene.
– **Chinatown (West End)** – A bustling locale offering authentic Chinese restaurants, shops, and cultural festivities.

These are merely a few instances of London’s diverse neighbourhoods, each presenting a distinct cultural experience.

### Concluding Thoughts

Finding an appropriate living space in London hinges on personal preferences, budget, and lifestyle requirements. Whether you value affordability, closeness to university, or cultural resonance, London provides a wide array of housing solutions. Embracing the city’s diversity, navigating various neighbourhoods, and savoring its lively atmosphere can create a truly memorable experience.
