### Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was consumed by anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism regarding what awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a naturally shy and reserved individual, embarking on this new adventure felt daunting. Now, reflecting on my first year, I recognize it as a journey of personal development, obstacles, and an abundance of unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most significant challenges I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student, this might be a concern you share. I recall arriving at my accommodation a few days prior to the term and spending an entire day isolated in my room, unable to muster the courage to go out and meet new people.
Fast forward to today, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversation with others who were navigating the same situation.
The essential takeaway? Make the effort early. If you don’t feel prepared or comfortable, don’t fret—there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to meet people. Most crucially, just be yourself. With such a diverse student community, you’re bound to encounter individuals who align with your interests and values.
#### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another considerable challenge was adjusting to the increased workload and complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from first to second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and question your capabilities, particularly when you notice others studying and grasping concepts faster.
What benefitted me the most was understanding that I wasn’t alone. If I found a topic challenging, chances were that many others did as well. The best strategy in your first year is to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or professors.
#### The Value of Seeking Assistance
This leads me to another important insight: the support from the Materials Science department is outstanding. The faculty truly want students to thrive and are always receptive to hearing about our challenges. They empathize with our struggles and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year.
I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. One of the best choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with staff, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to foster relationships with faculty, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience.
The primary lesson here? Take full advantage of the support offered to you. There’s no limit on how much help you can seek!
#### Concluding Thoughts
In retrospect, my first year at Imperial has shown me that the apprehension I felt—both prior to and during university—was largely unwarranted. There are countless support systems available, from faculty to fellow students, ensuring that no one has to tackle challenges in isolation. Most importantly, I’ve learned how to juggle academic demands with enjoying my university experience.
If you’re about to embark on your own journey, my advice is straightforward: take the risk, seek help when necessary, and embrace every opportunity that arises.
