**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension about what was ahead. As a person who has always leaned towards being shy and introverted, embarking on this new phase felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the year, I recognize it has been a journey of personal development, challenges, and countless unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and how do I feel now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered early on was the process of making friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing—just days before the term officially kicked off—I was so daunted that I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to reach out to others.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I’ve found a second family here at Imperial; all it took was stepping out of my comfort zone and engaging in conversations with people experiencing similar feelings.
So, what have I learned? First, taking that first step is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease right away, that’s okay—there will be plenty of icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Second, the best approach is to be authentic. Given the vibrant mix of students, you’re certain to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and complexity of the syllabus. The transition from A-levels was stark, and the leap from the first term to the second was even greater. There were moments when I felt inundated and questioned my capabilities, especially as I observed others intensely engrossed in their studies.
However, I soon understood that everyone was navigating similar struggles. If I was confused by something, it was likely that others were as well. The key takeaway I gained was the importance of seeking assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Reaching out for help is not a sign of failure but a vital aspect of succeeding in university.
### The Value of Staff Support
One remarkable aspect of this year has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science department. The staff sincerely cares about students’ success and is always open to suggestions. They recognize the challenges we encounter and actively strive to assist us.
I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral resources available until late in the year, but I wish I had capitalized on these opportunities sooner. Early on, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to develop connections with staff, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with professors and academic personnel, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My main takeaway? Make the most of the support at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Closing Thoughts
Looking back, this year has shown me that the anxieties I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—were often unwarranted. With the right backing from both faculty and fellow students, those apprehensions became more manageable. I’ve recognized that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to juggle academic demands with enjoyment.
For anyone gearing up to begin university, my advice is straightforward: embrace the journey, pursue help when needed, and be open to taking risks. It’s a path of growth, and you’ll emerge more resilient on the other side.
