**Thoughts on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, doubt, and uncertainty as I got ready to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Venturing into the unknown felt intimidating, particularly for someone like me, who has always been somewhat introverted. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been a period filled with significant personal development, challenges, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of my primary challenges at the outset was forging friendships. If you are a future student, you might share this concern. On my first day in student housing, I felt so daunted that I remained in my room the whole day, too apprehensive to introduce myself. Yet, fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve found some of the most amazing friends I’ve ever known.
The crucial takeaway? Take that step forward. Even when you’re feeling reluctant, there will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and social events designed to help you connect with others. Most importantly, be authentic—Imperial boasts a diverse community, and you’re sure to meet people who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to the Academic Challenge
Another significant challenge was the shift from A-levels to the rigors of university coursework. The workload considerably increased, and the complexity of the material surged even more from the first to second term. It was easy to feel bogged down and question my abilities, particularly when I observed others engaging in intense study.
What aided me in this journey was the realization that I wasn’t navigating this alone. If I was grappling with a concept, it was likely that others were too. The best strategy? Don’t hesitate to ask for help. Whether it’s from peers or professors, seeking assistance is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Vital Role of Staff Support
A highlight of my experience has been the remarkable support offered by the Materials Science department. The staff are genuinely invested in students’ welfare and academic achievement. They grasp the difficulties we encounter and foster open communication throughout the academic year.
Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until later on, I wish I had accessed it earlier. Taking on the responsibilities of a year well-being representative enabled me to establish connections with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly elevate your university experience. My key insight? Utilize the resources available—you can never have too much assistance.
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, I’ve realized that many of my initial anxieties were unfounded. The encouragement from both staff and peers made a profound impact. I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely alone and that balancing academic demands with a fulfilling university life is entirely feasible.
For anyone about to embark on their journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: embrace the challenges, seek help when necessary, and seize every opportunity. University is a time for growth, and with the right attitude, it can be an exceptionally rewarding experience.
