**Contemplations on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehensions about what was to come. As a first-year student poised to embark on my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link), I found myself entering a realm of the unknown. Embracing risks and venturing outside my comfort zone was not an experience I was familiar with. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it was a journey rich in personal development, obstacles, and numerous joyful experiences. What lessons have I garnered from this journey, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Fear of Making Connections

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered early on was the quest to forge friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might also concern you greatly. On my inaugural day in student housing, just prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. However, sitting here now, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known—companions who feel like a second family.

What have I learned? Taking that initial leap is invariably worthwhile. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be ample ice-breakers and social gatherings to facilitate connections with others. Most importantly, just be authentic. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another substantial challenge was adjusting to the demands of the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe others studying with confidence.

What aided me through this phase was the realization that I wasn’t alone. If I struggled to grasp a concept, it was likely that others were facing similar difficulties. The essential takeaway? Don’t shy away from seeking help—whether from classmates or instructors. Seeking assistance is one of the most valuable skills you can cultivate during your first year.

### Fostering Connections with Faculty and Seeking Guidance

One of the most comforting elements of my program was the outstanding support from the teaching staff. They sincerely desire for students to excel and comprehend the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication and offered guidance whenever necessary.

I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support offered until later in the year, but I wish I had engaged with it sooner. One of my best choices was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to interact with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My chief takeaway? Take full advantage of the assistance and resources accessible—you can never receive too much support.

### Concluding Thoughts

In summary, this year has enlightened me that the apprehensions I held before commencing university were largely unfounded. There are abundant support networks available—from staff to peers—so no one needs to face challenges in isolation. Most crucially, I’ve learned how to balance academic demands while also savoring my university experience.

If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, understand that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious. But also keep in mind that with the right attitude and support, you’ll evolve, acclimatize, and create amazing memories throughout your journey.
