**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with apprehension, uncertainty, and skepticism about what the future held. I was on the verge of commencing my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat reserved and shy, immersing myself in an entirely new setting felt daunting. Reflecting on this past year, I perceive a journey rich with personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable moments. But what have I discovered, and where do I currently find myself?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
A major challenge I encountered at the start of university was the task of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, you might share similar concerns. On my inaugural day in student housing, I was so apprehensive about encountering new individuals that I spent the whole day locked away in my room, steering clear of social interactions. However, as the weeks progressed, I slowly began engaging with others in my course and accommodation. Presently, I am proud to say that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I have ever experienced.
What is the primary lesson I’ve gleaned? Take that leap of faith. Even when feeling anxious or uncertain, there are numerous icebreaker opportunities and events to meet others. Most importantly, remain true to yourself. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another substantial obstacle was adjusting to the academic demands and complexity of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university studies was marked, and the shift from the first to the second term was particularly intense. At times, I found myself questioning my abilities, especially when observing others appear more assured in their studies.
What enabled me to persevere was the comprehension that I was not in this alone. If I was struggling with a specific subject, it was likely that others shared the same experience. The most valuable lesson I learned was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or academic staff. Reaching out for help is not indicative of weakness; it’s a vital component of the learning process.
### The Significance of Engaging with Faculty
One of the most priceless elements of my first year was the exceptional support from the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely prioritize student well-being and academic achievement. They recognize the challenges we encounter and maintain open lines of communication throughout the academic year.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I’d done so earlier. Initially, I took the bold step of becoming a year well-being representative, which helped me foster connections with faculty members. Establishing rapport with your lecturers and academic advisors can be incredibly advantageous, and I strongly recommend that new students leverage the available support.
### Essential Lessons from My First Year
Reflecting on this year, I have learned that many of the anxieties I harbored prior to starting university were unfounded. There is always assistance available, be it from staff or fellow students. I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely isolated in my challenges and that enjoying university life amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines is entirely possible.
To anyone on the verge of beginning their university adventure: welcome challenges, seek support when needed, and most importantly, permit yourself to evolve. University is not solely focused on academics—it’s about cultivating friendships, enhancing self-assurance, and uncovering your true self.
