**Reflections on My Initial Year Pursuing Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London, entering a completely new setting. As a person who had previously been shy and introverted, diving into this experience felt daunting. Reflecting back now, I recognize a year full of personal development, obstacles, and countless unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered early in my journey was the challenge of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, this might be one of your primary worries as well. I recall my first day settling into my new accommodation—I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself. However, as I reflect today, I can say with assurance that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had.

The essential lesson I discovered? Take the plunge. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most critically, be authentic. With such a varied student body, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was getting used to the academic workload and the complexity of the course content. The transition from A-levels was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more rigorous. At moments, I questioned my capabilities, particularly when observing my peers studying with apparent confidence.

What empowered me to persevere was the recognition that everyone was experiencing similar feelings. If I struggled with a concept, it was likely that others did too. Reaching out for assistance—whether from classmates or faculty—emerged as one of the most valuable practices I cultivated. If there’s one piece of wisdom I’d share with new students, it’s this: don’t hesitate to ask for help.

### Assistance from Faculty and Well-being Programs

One of the most comforting elements of my first year was the outstanding support provided by the department staff. They genuinely care about student success and are always receptive to feedback. While I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.

At the start, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to interact with faculty members and gain a clearer understanding of the available support systems. Building relationships with your lecturers and tutors can be tremendously advantageous, and I strongly suggest making use of the assistance offered.

### Key Lessons from My First Year

In retrospect, this year has shown me that the anxieties and concerns I harbored before commencing university were mostly unfounded. There exists a wealth of support—from staff, peers, and university resources—to assist students in overcoming challenges. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I’m never alone on this path.

Striking a balance between academic obligations and personal enjoyment has been an essential takeaway. Despite the pressures of exams and deadlines, I’ve discovered ways to fully engage with my university experience. If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, my advice is straightforward: embrace the challenges, seek help when necessary, and savor the journey.
