**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and a hint of fear regarding what the future held. I was on the cusp of beginning my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted and reserved, immersing myself in an entirely new setting was intimidating. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships
A significant challenge I encountered at the beginning was the formation of friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may feel similarly. I certainly did—so much so that on my inaugural day in student housing, I remained in my room for the entirety of the day, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with stepping outside my comfort level and engaging in casual conversation with others who were navigating the same experience.
What have I learned? Making that initial move is always worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be an abundance of ice-breakers and social gatherings to facilitate connections. Most importantly, simply be yourself—Imperial is filled with a variety of individuals, and you’re sure to encounter those who align with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another considerable obstacle was adjusting to the academic load and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university studies was considerable, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more demanding. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when observing others studying and seeming to grasp ideas quicker than you.
What aided me in persevering was the awareness that everyone experiences difficulties at times. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, it’s likely that others are too. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or academic faculty. Learning to ask for help is among the most beneficial skills you can cultivate during your first year.
### The Value of Staff Support
Speaking of assistance, one of the most outstanding features of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the remarkable staff. They genuinely care about students’ success and are consistently receptive to input and communication. Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a chance and became a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be extremely valuable. There are numerous opportunities to engage with lecturers and academic staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My key takeaway? Make the most of the any available resources—you can never have too much support.
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve come to realize that much of the apprehension I felt prior to and during university was largely unwarranted. There are numerous support systems available, ranging from faculty to fellow students, that can assist in smoothing the transition. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone, and it’s entirely possible to relish university life even while tackling the demands of exams and deadlines.
If you’re about to embark on your journey at Imperial, my message is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and embrace the adventure. You’ll evolve in ways you never anticipated, and you may very well find a second home in the process.
