**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was engulfed with anxiety, ambiguity, and hesitation regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been shy and introverted, embarking on this new chapter felt quite daunting. Reflecting now, I realize this year has been filled with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student, you might share this concern. I recall my initial day moving into student housing—I felt so daunted that I remained in my room for an entire day, too apprehensive to introduce myself to anyone.

Fast forward to the present, and I can assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with stepping outside of my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others who were experiencing similar situations.

So, what have I taken away from this? Firstly, taking that first plunge is always worthwhile. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Secondly, being authentic is paramount. With such a diverse student body, you’re certain to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was pronounced, and moving from the first to second term brought even more intensity. At times, it was easy to feel inundated and question my capabilities, particularly when I compared myself to others.

What assisted me during this period was recognizing that everyone was similarly situated. If I found a concept challenging, it was likely that others were too. The essential lesson here? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from peers or instructors, reaching out for help is one of the most invaluable skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### Maximizing Support Networks

This leads me to another crucial aspect—the outstanding support from the Materials department staff. They sincerely want students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they maintained consistent communication, addressing our issues and providing guidance.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, and I wish I had done so earlier. One of the most beneficial choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which turned out to be tremendously advantageous. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My main takeaway? Take full advantage of the support offered—you can never receive too much help!

### Closing Thoughts

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve learned that the anxieties and uncertainties I experienced prior to starting university were mostly unfounded. There are countless support structures in place, from staff to fellow students, ensuring that no one has to navigate this journey alone. I’ve acquired the ability to juggle academic demands while savoring university life, and I’ve grown in ways I never anticipated.

For anyone preparing to embark on their university adventure, my guidance is straightforward: take the plunge, ask for assistance when needed, and seize every opportunity that arises. You’ll be amazed at how much you evolve along the way.
