**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension about the journey ahead. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Exiting my comfort zone was not something my previously shy and reserved persona was familiar with. Reflecting now, I see a year abundant with personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most considerable obstacles I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student, this might also be one of your major worries. On my initial day in student housing, just days prior to the term starting, I spent an entire day isolated in my room, too daunted to go out and introduce myself. However, as I sit here now, I can confidently assert that I have cultivated some of the most rewarding friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all started with a few moments of casual conversation with others who were in the same situation.
So, what did I discover? I came to realize that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease right away, that’s perfectly fine—there will be plenty of social events and opportunities to meet peers. Most importantly, I learned that being true to yourself is the best strategy. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the rigorous coursework and the heightened difficulty of the material. The transition from A-levels was apparent, and the switch from the first to the second term proved to be even more intense. Being in such a demanding academic environment can sometimes erode your confidence—you might observe others studying and feel as though you’re not keeping pace.
What aided me during this period was the realization that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find a concept unclear, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well. The best step you can take is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. Learning to ask for help is among the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Significance of Support Networks
This leads me to another crucial takeaway—the amazing support from the Materials Science department staff. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and comprehend the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and offered invaluable guidance.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the academic year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. At the year’s outset, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This role enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be extremely valuable. There are multiple avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My top advice? Utilize the resources available—you can never have too much support.
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that many of the anxieties I had prior to embarking on my university journey were unfounded. Numerous support systems exist, both from staff and fellow students, to assist you in navigating challenges. Most importantly, I’ve come to understand that I am never truly alone. Despite the pressure of exams and deadlines, I’ve found ways to enjoy my university life, and I wouldn’t exchange this experience for anything.
If you’re about to embark on your own university journey, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and seize every opportunity that arises. You’ll be amazed at the extent to which you grow along the way.
