**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, uncertainty, and questions about what awaited me. I was on the verge of beginning my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer. Venturing beyond my familiar boundaries was unfamiliar territory, as I had always been introverted and reserved. Reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

A significant challenge I encountered at the onset of university was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be a concern of yours. On my first day settling into my accommodation, I remained in my room the whole day, too daunted to go out and introduce myself. Yet, sitting here today, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel akin to family.

What was my takeaway from this experience? It’s always worthwhile to take that first leap. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there are plenty of icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most crucially, just be yourself. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another considerable challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened difficulty of university-level subjects. The transition from A-levels was significant, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more demanding. It was all too easy to feel inundated, particularly when surrounded by equally driven students.

What aided me in this journey? Reminding myself that I wasn’t alone. If I found a concept difficult, it was likely that others shared the same struggle. The most valuable lesson I learned was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness; rather, it’s an essential skill to cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Faculty Support

One of the most comforting components of my course was the exceptional support from the teaching staff. They truly wish for students to thrive and are always receptive to discussing any challenges we face. Although I didn’t fully utilize pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This role enabled me to establish connections with faculty, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with lecturers and tutors, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Leverage the support available—you can never have an excess of help.

### Concluding Thoughts

In retrospect, my initial fears seem largely unfounded. The support from both faculty and fellow students was transformative. I’ve come to understand that I’m never genuinely alone and that it’s feasible to navigate academic challenges while enjoying a fulfilling university experience.

For those about to embark on their own university journey, my counsel is straightforward: take that initial step, seek help when necessary, and seize the opportunities that present themselves. You’ll evolve more than you ever anticipated.
