**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts regarding what was ahead. As someone who had always been introverted and reserved, beginning this fresh chapter felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I now recognize a journey filled with personal development, obstacles, and countless unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating parts of starting university was the task of making new friends. If you are a potential student reading this, you may share similar feelings. On my first day in student housing, I felt so intimidated that I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to introduce myself to anyone. However, fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life.
What was the key insight I acquired? Take the initiative. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to mingle. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to Academic Rigors
The change from A-levels to university-level studies was yet another major challenge. The workload surged, and the complexity of the material escalated, especially from the first term to the second. It can be easy to feel daunted or question your skills when you witness others studying with assurance.
What aided me in overcoming this? Remembering that I wasn’t the only one facing difficulties. If I grappled with a concept, chances were that others were too. The most important lesson I learned was to ask for assistance—whether from peers or instructors. Seeking help is not indicative of weakness, but rather a vital asset for success.
### The Significance of Finding Support
One of the most precious elements of my first year was the outstanding support from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely desire students to thrive and are always open for discussions regarding any obstacles we encounter. Although I didn’t fully leverage pastoral support until later in the academic year, I wish I had sought it out sooner.
At the beginning, I took a risk by serving as a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to engage with staff members, which turned out to be extremely advantageous. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My primary lesson? Make the most of the available support—there is no such thing as too much help.
### Concluding Thoughts
Looking back on my inaugural year, I’ve come to realize that many of my initial anxieties were unfounded. The university offers a wealth of resources to assist students in managing both academic and social hurdles. Most crucially, I’ve learned that I’m never genuinely alone. Amid the pressures of exams and deadlines, I’ve discovered methods to enjoy my time at Imperial.
For anyone about to embark on their university adventure: relish the experience, take chances, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You will evolve in ways you never envisioned, and before long, you’ll reflect on your first year with a sense of pride and appreciation.
