### Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts about what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who has always been somewhat introverted, starting this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on it now, I recognize a year brimming with personal evolution, obstacles, and many delightful experiences. So, what insights have I gained from this journey, and what’s my current perspective?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the major obstacles I encountered initially was the challenge of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern of yours as well. On the very first day of my student housing, just before classes commenced, I spent an entire day confined to my room, too nervous to venture out and greet anyone. However, as I write this now, I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life—bonds that feel like family.

What facilitated this? Simply initiating brief conversations with individuals who were facing similar circumstances. I discovered that taking that initial step, even if it feels awkward, is invariably worthwhile. If you’re not prepared right away, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to engage with peers. Most crucially, I realized that authenticity is the best strategy. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to encounter others who resonate with your interests and values.

#### Adapting to Academic Rigors

Another notable challenge was adjusting to the demands of the coursework and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more so. At times, witnessing others study adeptly made me doubt my own abilities.

What helped me navigate this? Reminding myself that everyone else was experiencing similar struggles. If there was something I didn’t grasp, it was likely that others were having a tough time too. The best counsel I can offer is to ask for assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members. Learning to seek help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate during your first year.

#### The Value of Staff Support

On the topic of support, the staff within the Materials department are truly exceptional. They genuinely wish for students to thrive and comprehend the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing valuable guidance.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I regret not tapping into it sooner. One proactive step I took early on was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role permitted me to forge connections with faculty, which proved to be immensely advantageous. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can greatly enrich your university journey. My key takeaway? Make the most of the available support—you can never have too much assistance!

#### Concluding Thoughts

In hindsight, this year has revealed to me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was often unwarranted. There are so many support structures available, from faculty to fellow students, that no one needs to feel isolated. Moreover, I’ve learned how to juggle academic demands with savoring my university experience.

For anyone about to embark on their journey, my message is straightforward: take that leap, seek help when necessary, and fully embrace the experience. You’ll evolve in ways you never imagined, and before long, you’ll be reminiscing about a remarkable first year.
