### Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts about the future. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and shy, entering this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on it now, I recognize a year abundant with personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I currently find myself?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Friend-Making

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered initially was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a concern for you as well. On my first day at the student accommodation, I felt so intimidated that I spent the entire day in my room, too anxious to reach out to others.

Fast forward to the present, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve established some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with stepping beyond my comfort zone to engage in casual conversations with others who were experiencing similar feelings.

What have I taken away from this? Making that first move at the start of the year is always rewarding. If you’re feeling unprepared, don’t fret—numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to meet others will arise. Most importantly, just be true to yourself. With a vibrant and varied student community, you are sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

#### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another major challenge was acclimatizing to the rigorous workload and enhanced difficulty of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was marked, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more demanding. It was easy to become overwhelmed, particularly when I compared myself to peers who appeared to grasp concepts more swiftly.

What guided me through this experience was the understanding that everyone faces struggles at some point. If you’re struggling with comprehension, chances are many others are too. The most effective step you can take is to ask for assistance—whether it be from your classmates or academic personnel. Learning to seek help is among the most crucial abilities you can cultivate during your first year.

#### The Value of Seeking Assistance

On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department are outstanding. They truly desire for students to prosper and are perpetually open to suggestions and discussions regarding any issues we encounter. Although I didn’t fully tap into the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had leveraged it sooner.

At the beginning of the year, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to establish connections with faculty members, which turned out to be tremendously advantageous. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and doing so can profoundly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support offered—you can never have too much assistance!

#### Final Thoughts

As I reflect back, this year has taught me that the anxiety I experienced prior to starting university was unwarranted. There are abundant support systems available, from the staff to fellow students, to guide you throughout this transition. Most significantly, I have learned that I am never truly alone, and I have found a way to balance academic demands while enjoying university life.

If you’re on the brink of embarking on your own university experience, my counsel is straightforward: embrace the obstacles, seek help when necessary, and allow yourself to evolve. You’ll be astonished by what you can accomplish in just a single year.
