**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been quiet and introverted, immersing myself in a brand-new environment seemed daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I see it as a time of personal development, challenges, and loads of enjoyable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
### Conquering the Fear of Friendship
A significant obstacle I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might be experiencing similar feelings. I recall my initial day settling into my accommodation—I was so daunted by the thought of introducing myself that I ended up spending the whole day in my room. However, as I sit here now, I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the closest friends I’ve ever had.
The pivotal step was taking that first plunge—initiating small talks with others who found themselves in the same boat. If you’re feeling anxious, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to meet new faces. Most importantly, I discovered that being authentic is the best strategy. With a diverse range of students, you’re sure to encounter individuals who share your passions and beliefs.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was acclimating to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more challenging. It’s natural to feel swamped when observing others studying and to begin questioning your own capabilities.
What was most beneficial for me was the realization that I wasn’t the only one—many of my classmates were grappling with the same issues. If you’re confused about something, it’s likely that others are too. The best course of action is to seek assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or instructors, reaching out for support is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Seeking Assistance
This leads me to another important lesson—the exceptional support provided by the Materials department staff. They earnestly want students to thrive and are always receptive to input. Throughout the academic year, they kept communication lines open, making sure we felt acknowledged and supported.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had tapped into it sooner. One of the finest choices I made was to serve as a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to engage with staff, proving to be an invaluable opportunity. There are numerous ways to interact with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My recommendation? Utilize the support that’s available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve discovered that many of the fears I harbored—both prior to and during university—were unfounded. A plethora of support exists, from both staff and fellow students, to guide you through any difficulties. Most importantly, I’ve come to understand that I’m never genuinely alone. Despite the pressures of exams and deadlines, I’ve managed to find enjoyment in my university experience, and I wouldn’t exchange this journey for anything.
If you’re about to embark on your university adventure, embrace the obstacles, seek help when needed, and above all, be true to yourself. You can do this!
