**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts about what the future would hold. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was familiar with. Now, reflecting back, I acknowledge a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections
One of the primary obstacles I encountered early on was the challenge of forming connections. If you are an incoming student, this might also be a concern for you. On my initial day in student housing, right before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. However, as I sit here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. Imperial has evolved into a second home, and all it required was a little small talk with others who were in similar situations.
So, what did I take away from this? That initial jump is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease right away, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to encounter individuals who share your passions and principles.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more demanding. It’s easy to feel daunted or to question your capabilities, especially when you observe others studying and infer that they have everything under control.
What aided me in this process was the understanding that everyone faces difficulties at some point. If you’re struggling with something, it’s likely that others are as well. The most beneficial action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Cultivating the ability to request help is one of the most essential skills to acquire during your first year.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They truly care about students’ success and are aware of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing guidance.
I didn’t fully utilize the student support resources available until later in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. One of the best choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are various ways to foster relationships with your lecturers and tutors, and doing so can tremendously enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Take full advantage of the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I harbored—both prior to and during university—was often unfounded. There are countless support mechanisms in place, from faculty to fellow students, ensuring that no one has to navigate challenges alone. I’ve learned how to manage stress from exams and deadlines while still relishing my university experience.
If you are about to embark on your journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take that leap, seek help when needed, and fully embrace the experience. You will grow in ways you never imagined.
