**Contemplations on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself engulfed in nerves, uncertainty, and apprehension regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having been quite reserved and introverted in the past, immersing myself in this new experience felt overwhelming. Now, reflecting on my initial academic year, I perceive a path of personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re a potential student, this may also be a concern for you. I vividly remember my first day moving into my accommodation—I was so daunted that I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to introduce myself to anyone.
However, as I reflect now, I can assert with certainty that I have forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with fellow students who were experiencing the same initial fears.
So, what have I discovered? I came to understand that taking that initial step is invariably worthwhile. If you don’t initially feel ready or at ease, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with people. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is the most effective strategy. With such a varied student population, you are sure to meet others who share your passions and beliefs.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic load and the complexity of the course material. The shift from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It was easy to become overwhelmed, particularly when observing others studying and beginning to doubt my own abilities.
What assisted me during this time was the reminder that everyone was experiencing similar struggles. If I didn’t grasp a concept, it was likely that others were wrestling with it as well. The most beneficial action I took was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or the teaching staff. Learning to reach out for support early is one of the most invaluable lessons learned during my first year.
### The Value of Staff Support
Speaking of assistance, one of the most remarkable aspects of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the outstanding staff. They are genuinely invested in students’ success and recognize the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained transparent communication with us, ensuring we received the support necessary.
Although I did not fully utilize pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, I wish I had begun earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step and became a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish connections with staff members, which turned out to be exceedingly beneficial. There are various ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My major takeaway? Make use of the existing support—you can never receive too much help!
### Closing Thoughts
In retrospect, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before and during the beginning of university was largely unfounded. There are numerous support systems available, from staff to fellow students, which means no one has to navigate this experience alone. I’ve learned to balance academic pressures with personal enjoyment, and I now feel far more confident about the years that lie ahead.
For those about to embark on their university adventure, my guidance is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and most importantly, stay true to yourself. You’ll discover your niche, just as I have.
