**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about my future. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being naturally shy and introverted, this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting aspects of starting university was the prospect of making new friends. If you’re an incoming student, this might be your number one worry as well. On my first day in student housing, just prior to the term starting, I spent a whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. However, sitting here today, I can proudly declare that I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships of my life. Imperial has become a second home, and all it required was a little casual conversation with others who were feeling the same way.

So, what have I taken away from this? It’s always worthwhile to take the initiative early on. If you don’t feel ready immediately, don’t stress—there will be numerous ice-breakers and social activities designed to help you meet others. Above all, be authentic. With such a diverse student community, you’re bound to connect with individuals who share your interests and principles.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was acclimating to the rigorous workload and heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was notable, and moving from the first to the second term felt even more strenuous. It’s easy to feel swamped when observing others studying and to start questioning your own competence.

What enabled me to persevere was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re finding it tough to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The most beneficial action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or teaching personnel. Learning to ask for help is among the most crucial skills you can cultivate during your first year.

### The Value of Interacting with Faculty

A standout aspect of my experience has been the exceptional assistance from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely care about students’ success and recognize the challenges we encounter. They maintain transparent communication throughout the year and are always ready to offer help.

I didn’t fully utilize pastoral support until later in the year, and I wish I had done so much earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a courageous step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with the faculty, and doing so can greatly enrich your experience at university. My most significant lesson? Make the most of the support available—you can’t have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Upon reflection, this year has shown me that the fears and apprehensions I had prior to starting university were mostly unfounded. With adequate support from faculty and fellow students, those concerns quickly diminished. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone and that balancing academic pressures with an enjoyable university life is entirely feasible.

For anyone gearing up to begin their own journey, my guidance is straightforward: take that initial step, seek help when necessary, and fully embrace all that university life has to offer.
