**Reflections on My Inaugural Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was engulfed in nerves, uncertainty, and reservations about what was to come. I was about to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an inherently shy and reserved individual, entering this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and memorable moments. But what have I discovered, and how do I feel today?

### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered initially was the challenge of making friends. If you’re a potential student, this may be a significant concern for you as well. On my first day in student accommodation, my apprehension was so great that I remained in my room the entire day, too anxious to introduce myself to anyone. However, as time progressed, I gradually ventured out of my comfort zone and engaged in casual conversations with those in similar circumstances.

Today, I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all commencing with straightforward dialogues. My key takeaway? Don’t hesitate to take the plunge early on. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, be authentic—Imperial is brimming with diverse personalities, and you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with you.

### Adjusting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was acclimating to the academic demands and the complexities of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first to the second term proved even more daunting. At times, I felt inundated and questioned whether I was keeping pace. Observing others studying rigorously can occasionally lead to self-doubt.

What assisted me in persevering was the realization that everyone was navigating similar challenges. If I struggled to grasp a concept, it was likely that others were too. The most valuable lesson I learned was the importance of seeking help—whether from classmates or instructors. Asking for assistance is not a flaw; it’s one of the most crucial skills to cultivate during your first year.

### The Significance of Support from Faculty

One of the most reassuring elements of my experience was the remarkable support from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely care about students’ success and are always receptive to feedback. They recognize the challenges we encounter and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the academic year.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Initially, I stepped out of my comfort zone by becoming a year well-being representative, which facilitated connections with staff members. This proved to be immensely advantageous. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My most important lesson here? Utilize the support available to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting back, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before starting university was mostly unwarranted. There exist numerous support systems—from staff to fellow students—ensuring that no one need face challenges alone. Most critically, I’ve learned how to juggle academic demands with enjoyment, maximizing my time at Imperial.

If you’re about to begin your university journey and feeling uneasy, remember that you’re not alone. Embrace the challenge, seek help when needed, and welcome the journey that lies ahead. It may be tough, but it will also rank among the most gratifying experiences of your life.
