**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with apprehension, uncertainty, and excitement as I readied myself to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial. As a person who has often been somewhat introverted, stepping into this new phase felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a journey of personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the foremost challenges I encountered early on was the quest to make friends. If you are an incoming student, this may be a concern for you as well. I recall moving into my accommodation a few days prior to the start of the term and spending an entire day in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. However, jumping to the present, I can affirm that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced.
The secret? Taking that initial step. Striking up casual conversations with others in similar circumstances assisted me in forging connections. If you’re feeling anxious, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet fresh faces. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied student demographic, you’re likely to find peers who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic load and the heightened difficulty of university-level material. The transition from A-levels was palpable, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more intense. It’s easy to second-guess yourself when observing others study and feeling as if you’re lagging behind.
What supported me through this was the realization that everyone shares similar challenges. If you’re struggling with a concept, likely, others are too. The most effective approach is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Cultivating the ability to ask for support is among the most essential skills you can develop in your freshman year.
### The Value of Seeking Assistance
Speaking of assistance, the staff in the Materials department are outstanding. They truly wish for students to thrive and are consistently receptive to feedback and discussions regarding any issues we encounter. I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support offered until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.
At the year’s outset, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to foster connections with faculty members, which proved to be exceptionally beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your academic journey. My greatest takeaway? Make the most of the support offered—you can never receive too much help.
### Concluding Thoughts
In retrospect, this year has shown me that many of the apprehensions I harbored before starting university were unfounded. There is always assistance available, whether from staff or fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never truly on my own, and I’ve figured out how to balance academic demands with enjoying university life.
For anyone poised to embark on their university adventure, my guidance is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and embrace all opportunities that arise. It’s a tough yet thoroughly rewarding journey, and I wouldn’t exchange it for anything.
