### Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and concern about what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and quiet, entering this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on it now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what have I discovered, and what is my position today?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Friend-Making

A significant obstacle I encountered early on was the challenge of making new friends. If you’re an incoming student, you might be feeling the same apprehension. I recall arriving at my accommodation a few days before classes began and spending an entire day in my room, feeling too shy to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most cherished friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others who were equally nervous.

So, what did I glean from this experience? The most beneficial action is to take that first step. If you’re not feeling ready, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to meet new people. Above all, just be yourself. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and beliefs.

#### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and an even larger shift from the first term to the second. At times, it was easy to feel daunted and question my capabilities, especially when observing classmates studying intensely.

What aided me during this period was the understanding that everyone was facing similar difficulties. If I struggled to grasp a concept, it was likely that others were having the same issue. The crucial takeaway? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or instructors, asking for help is one of the most essential skills to cultivate in your first year.

#### The Value of Interacting with Faculty

One of the most rewarding aspects of my experience has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science department. The staff truly care about helping students succeed and are always receptive to feedback. They recognize the hurdles we encounter and actively strive to assist us.

Even though I didn’t fully embrace the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had sought it out sooner. Early on, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my year, which allowed me to foster connections with faculty members. Building relationships with your professors and academic staff can be immensely beneficial, and there are numerous opportunities to do so. My main takeaway? Leverage the available support—you can never have too much assistance.

#### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the concerns I had before starting university were mostly unfounded. There are numerous support systems in place, ranging from staff to fellow students, ensuring no one has to feel isolated. Most importantly, I’ve figured out how to juggle academic responsibilities while savoring the university experience.

To anyone about to start their university journey: embrace the adventure, step beyond your comfort zone, and don’t hesitate to seek help when necessary. It’s all part of the remarkable journey that university life encompasses.
