**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt about what awaited me. I was about to embark on my first year of studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted, entering this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been filled with personal development, challenges, and extraordinary moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Confronting the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was the prospect of forming friendships. If you’re an upcoming student, you might share this concern. On my very first day in student housing, my nerves got the best of me, and I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to introduce myself to anyone. However, now I can proudly say I’ve cultivated some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known.
Imperial has truly become a second home for me, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and striking up casual conversations with others in similar situations. My key takeaway? Take the initiative early. If you’re not feeling prepared, that’s alright—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet others. Above all, remain true to yourself. With such a varied student community, you’re likely to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of university coursework. The difference from A-levels was palpable, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more substantial. Occasionally, it was easy to feel inundated and question my skills, particularly when witnessing others engrossed in their studies.
What aided me during this time was the understanding that everyone was grappling with similar challenges. If I struggled with a concept, it was likely that others were facing difficulties as well. My best piece of advice? Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. Cultivating this skill is vital during your first year. Whether seeking help from fellow students or approaching professors, always feel free to inquire.
### Value of Support from Faculty
A highlight of my first year was the remarkable support from the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely care about student success and are consistently receptive to input. They recognize the obstacles we encounter and actively strive to assist us.
While I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had started earlier. Initially, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my year, which helped me establish rapport with faculty members. This engagement revealed how advantageous it is to interact with staff. There are countless ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My essential takeaway? Utilize the available support—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Looking back, this year has illustrated that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university was unwarranted. There are ample support systems in place, from staff to peers, to guide you through the transition. I’ve realized that I’m never isolated, and I’ve learned how to juggle the pressures of academics with personal fulfillment.
For anyone about to embark on their university adventure, my recommendation is straightforward: embrace the challenges, seek help when necessary, and, most importantly, relish the experience.
