**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, embarking on this new journey felt quite daunting. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year rich with growth, obstacles, and unforgettable moments. But what insights has this year provided me, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating parts of starting university was the task of making new friends. If you’re a prospective student, this might be among your greatest worries as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, I felt so overwhelmed that I stayed in my room the whole day, too apprehensive to mingle with others. However, fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships in my life. Imperial has transformed into my second home, and all it required was stepping outside of my comfort zone and initiating conversations with peers who were equally in need of connection.
So, what did I take away from this experience? Taking that initial step is always rewarding. If you’re feeling unsure, rest assured—there will be numerous ice-breaking activities and chances to meet people. Most importantly, just be authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re destined to encounter like-minded individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was getting used to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more overwhelming. At times, I questioned my capabilities, especially when I noticed others studying and quickly grasping concepts.
What assisted me through this? Remembering that everyone faced similar challenges. If I found a topic difficult, it was likely that others were struggling too. The most important lesson I learned was to ask for assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Seeking help is not a sign of weakness; it’s one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
A standout aspect of my experience has been the remarkable support from the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely prioritize students’ well-being and academic achievements. They comprehend the hurdles we encounter and maintain open lines of communication to address any issues.
Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had sought it out earlier. At the start of the year, I made the decision to become a well-being representative for my cohort. This position allowed me to establish connections with faculty members, which was invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My main takeaway? Utilize the support resources available—you can never have too much assistance.
### Closing Reflections
In hindsight, this year has shown me that the fears and worries I harbored before entering university were largely unfounded. There exists a wealth of support from both staff and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone, and that it is possible to navigate academic pressures while having an enjoyable university experience.
For anyone commencing their university adventure, my advice is straightforward: embrace the challenges, seek help when needed, and give yourself permission to evolve. The first year may seem overwhelming at times, but it’s also a fantastic chance for self-exploration and personal growth.
