**Reflections on My Initial Year Engaging in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what the future held. I was on the verge of embarking on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Given my naturally shy and reserved disposition, beginning this new journey felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year rich with personal development, hurdles, and memorable moments. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most significant hurdles I encountered was making new friends. If you’re considering enrolling, this might also be a major worry for you. I vividly recall my first day moving into my accommodation—I was so apprehensive that I remained in my room all day, too anxious to meet anyone.
Nevertheless, as the year unfolded, I found myself in the company of some of the most wonderful friends I could have hoped for. I’ve created a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with brief conversations with others who were feeling just like me. My key insight? Don’t hesitate to reach out early. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be ample icebreaker activities and chances to connect with peers. Above all, stay true to yourself—Imperial boasts a vibrant community, and you’re sure to find individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the coursework. The leap from A-levels was quite apparent, and the transition from the first to the second term was particularly intense. It’s easy to feel inundated and question your capabilities, especially when observing others studying and assuming they have it all under control.
What aided me was the realization that we’re all in similar circumstances. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely others are experiencing the same. The best action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Developing the skill to ask for help is among the most important lessons you can learn in your first year.
### The Significance of Connecting with Faculty
On the subject of support, the faculty within the Materials department are extraordinary. They sincerely want students to thrive and are consistently receptive to feedback and conversations about the challenges we encounter. Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had started earlier.
At the year’s beginning, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This role allowed me to cultivate relationships with faculty members, which proved to be extremely beneficial. There are various ways to engage with faculty, and making those connections can greatly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Utilize the support available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve learned that much of the anxiety I felt before and during my university journey was often unwarranted. Numerous support systems exist, from faculty to fellow students, to help you navigate any difficulties. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I am never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to manage academic pressures while enjoying my time at university.
If you’re preparing to embark on your journey at Imperial, understand that while the transition may seem intimidating, it is also a thrilling opportunity for personal growth. Be bold, seek help when necessary, and fully embrace the experience—you won’t regret it!
