**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself engulfed in anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt about what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who had always been introverted, embarking on this new journey seemed daunting. Reflecting on that time now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and memorable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered was building friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be your primary concern. I recall my first day settling into student housing—I spent the entire day isolated in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. However, looking to the present, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, which all began with brief conversations with fellow students who shared similar situations. The greatest lesson I learned? Take that initial step at the onset of the year. Even if you don’t feel prepared, numerous ice-breaker events and chances to meet others are ahead. Most crucially, remain authentic to yourself. In such a varied student body, you’re likely to encounter individuals who align with your interests and beliefs.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

The shift from A-levels to university coursework represented another significant challenge. The increase in workload and the elevated difficulty of the content were pronounced, especially between the first and second terms. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when observing peers studying rigorously, but I discovered that we are all in this together.

If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The wisest course of action is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or the educators. Learning to seek out help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate during your first year.

### The Value of Staff Support

A standout aspect of my experience has been the remarkable backing provided by the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely care about students’ success and are always receptive to feedback. They recognize the challenges we encounter and proactively engage with us throughout the year to address any issues.

Though I didn’t fully utilize pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. Initially, I made a bold move by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to forge connections with staff members. Establishing relationships with your lecturers and tutors can be incredibly advantageous, and many opportunities exist to do so. My key takeaway? Take full advantage of the support available—you can never have too much assistance.

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of the anxieties I harbored—both prior to and during university—were unfounded. There is a wealth of support accessible, from both faculty and fellow students. This year has enlightened me that I’m never genuinely alone and that balancing academic challenges with a fulfilling university journey is achievable.

If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, my straightforward advice is this: take risks, seek assistance, and immerse yourself in the experience. You’ll develop in ways you never anticipated.
