In numerous respects, they’re spot on – every visualization of Silwood Park is indeed true!

As a part of this lesser-known faction at Imperial, I wish to showcase the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.

Welcome to Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor research site, covering 77 hectares and incorporating environments such as freshwater streams, ponds, an “ancient” woodland, and expansive meadows. A quick exploration on iNaturalist, an application for tracking and sharing biodiversity findings worldwide alongside a network of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and mushrooms have been registered on campus, and a further query on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been noted on campus thus far.

More fascinatingly, Silwood Park is the venue for numerous long-term research endeavors, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two among the most esteemed projects executed here.

Student Life at Silwood Park

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate scholars focused on ecology, conservation, and evolutionary research. Many of us take part in various clubs associated with Silwood Park. Some notable ones are:

Chicken Club – tending to the chickens kept behind our residence halls

Book Club – meeting regularly to converse about interesting reads

Gardening Club – overseeing the plots in our community garden

Conservation Club – arranging nature walks and conservation-related activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.

Being part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us further engage in the activities of clubs based in South Kensington!

Casually, we have clubs that involve sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), taking place either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

Apart from club activities and classes, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and manages such events, ensuring we enjoy a vibrant and engaging student life! Recently, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our largely international population came together to exchange languages and cultures over several weeks, and we celebrated the Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year by making dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. We’ve also experienced community-hosted parties celebrating global occasions (like Carnival) or gatherings just for the love of festivities.

However, my absolute favorite campus event is the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student collective. It’s a part of the Silwood culture that the quiz losers must organize the next event, and I can proudly assert that I’ve set the most pub quizzes this year. Even though I’ve lost countless pub quizzes due to my inadequate general trivia knowledge, there’s always a great time with wonderful company and a nice pint of beer.

Silwood Park: My Sanctuary Away from Home

Even though it’s a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt monotonous or lacking. Besides the multitude of events and activities, we possess a warm and inclusive community made up of students from across the globe. All of us cherish nature, appreciate our stunning campus grounds, and more importantly, enjoy each other’s presence. We’re a tight-knit community that loves stargazing in the winter chill on the open field beside our bar, watching

Written by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet with Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When most Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they think of a vibrant, enchanting, and green campus brimming with wildlife and plants seldom encountered at other locations like South Kensington or White City.
