In numerous respects, they’re correct – every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!

As a member of this lesser-known segment of the Imperial community, I wish to shed light on the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.

A brief overview of Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and featuring habitats such as freshwater streams, ponds, an “ancient” woodland, and expansive grasslands. A quick look on iNaturalist, an app for identifying and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide within a social network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. A further exploration on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been noted on campus thus far.

Moreover, Silwood Park is the host for numerous long-term field research initiatives, with Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more prominent studies conducted on-site.

Student experience at Silwood Park

The campus primarily comprises postgraduate students engaged in projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us participate in various clubs established at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:

Chicken Club – who care for the chickens raised behind our residences

Book Club – who meet regularly to discuss intriguing reads

Gardening Club – who take care of the plots in our community garden

Conservation Club – who coordinate nature walks and conservation-related activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.

Being a part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in activities of clubs situated in South Kensington!

Casually, we boast clubs that participate in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), based either at the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities in nearby municipalities like Bracknell or Ascot.

Alongside club activities and classes, we host numerous community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park has its dedicated student council that organizes and promotes these activities to foster a vibrant and dynamic student life! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community exchanged languages and cultures over several weeks. We also celebrated the Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, where we made dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We’ve also enjoyed community-organized celebrations for global events (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of social gatherings.

However, my favorite campus event is the weekly pub quiz organized by our student community. It’s become Silwood tradition that the participants who finish last in the pub quiz are responsible for setting up the next one, and I can proudly state that I’ve set the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Despite my frequent losses in pub quizzes attributed to my limited general knowledge, the experience is always filled with laughter, camaraderie, and a good pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my second home

Even though it’s a 30-minute stroll from the lively hustle and bustle of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed tedious or devoid of excitement. Alongside countless events and activities, we have a friendly and inclusive community of students from across the globe. We all cherish nature, our stunning campus surroundings, and, more crucially, each other’s presence. We are a tightly-knit community that relishes stargazing during the chilly winter nights in the open field beside our bar, observing the birds.

Authored by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet with Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they conjure images of a vibrant, enigmatic, and verdant campus bustling with flora and fauna rarely found in other locations like South Kensington or White City.
