In many ways, they are right—every representation of Silwood Park is indeed true!

As a member of this less-publicized Imperial community, I wish to shed light on student life, activities, and the community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.

Welcome to Silwood Park

Silwood Park operates as Imperial’s external laboratory, covering 77 hectares and containing habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and open grasslands. A brief exploration on iNaturalist, a platform for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations globally within a network of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Moreover, eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been noted on campus.

Notably, Silwood Park is home to several long-term field research initiatives, including the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, which are among the more prominent studies conducted here.

Life as a Student at Silwood Park

The campus mainly hosts postgraduate students pursuing projects in ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us are active members of various clubs located at Silwood Park. Some notable examples include:

Chicken Club – caring for chickens kept behind our residence halls

Book Club – engaging in discussions about interesting literature

Gardening Club – tending to allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – arranging nature walks and conservation-related activities for students at Silwood Park.

As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also join and actively take part in clubs based in South Kensington!

Informally, we partake in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), either at the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

In addition to club activities and classes, we host various community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and manages such activities to promote a lively and engaging student life! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our international community exchanged languages and cultures over several weeks. We also celebrated Chinese New Year with dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. Furthermore, we have organized parties commemorating global festivities (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of celebrating.

My favorite campus event is the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It’s a Silwood tradition that those who lose the quiz set the next one, and I can proudly state that I hold the record for the highest number of quizzes set this year. Despite my lack of trivia knowledge resulting in many defeats, there’s always enjoyment to be found in good company and a pint of beer.

Silwood Park: My Second Home

Even though it’s a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (such as the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park is far from boring or uneventful. Aside from the countless events and activities, we have a friendly and inclusive community of students from various parts of the globe. We all share a love for nature, our stunning campus grounds, and most importantly, each other’s company. We’re a tight-knit community that enjoys stargazing in the chilly winter on the open field adjacent to our bar, observing birds and mammals through our windows, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.

Most evenings, I prepare meals with my good friend from India, who shares my passion for Asian cuisine and birdwatching. We are often joined by friends living just a short walk away in nearby residence halls. After dinner, we typically indulge in board games or watch films together.
