In many respects, they are correct – every portrayal of Silwood Park is true!

As a voice for this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I wish to emphasize the student experience, activities, and community within our natural parkland setting in Ascot, Berkshire.

A glimpse into Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s open-air laboratory, covering 77 hectares and showcasing habitats that include freshwater streams, lakes, an ancient forest, and vast grasslands. A simple inquiry on iNaturalist, a platform for cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations globally alongside an online naturalist community, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, with an additional search on eBird indicating that 111 bird species have been observed here to date.

Furthermore, Silwood Park also hosts various long-term research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more recognized efforts taking place on-site.

Student experiences at Silwood Park

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students focused on projects in ecology, conservation, and evolution. Most of us are engaged in various clubs located at Silwood Park. Some noteworthy examples are:

Chicken Club – tending to the chickens that are raised behind our residential halls

Book Club – convening regularly to discuss interesting literature

Gardening Club – overseeing the allotments within our community garden

Conservation Club – coordinating nature walks and conservation-related activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.

Being a part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in activities organized by clubs in South Kensington!

Casually, we have clubs that involve sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), taking place either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

Apart from club activities and classes, numerous community-driven events occur on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that coordinates and promotes these activities to foster a lively and engaging student life! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community gathered to share languages and cultures over several weeks, and we celebrated Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year by making dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. We’ve also witnessed community-organized parties that celebrate global traditions (like Carnival) or simply gatherings to enjoy the spirit of festivity.

However, my favorite event on campus has to be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It has become Silwood tradition that the losing team of the pub quiz must host the next one, and I can proudly state I’ve set the most quizzes this year. Even though I’ve lost at many pub quizzes due to my lack of general knowledge, there’s always great enjoyment with friendly company and a good pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my home away from home

Even though it is a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (like the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt monotonous or lacking. Beyond the many events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community of students from around the globe. We all share a passion for nature, admire our beautiful campus, and, more importantly, cherish each other’s companionship. We form a tight-knit community that loves stargazing in the winter chill on the open field adjacent to

Authored by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet focused on Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a vibrant, enigmatic, and verdant campus filled with flora and fauna that are rare in other locations like South Kensington or White City.
