In many respects, they are correct – every portrayal of Silwood Park is true!

As a representative of this lesser-known community at Imperial, I wish to emphasize the student experience, activities, and camaraderie at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.

An overview of Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and encompassing ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and open meadows. A brief search on iNaturalist, an application for tracking and sharing biodiversity observations globally within a social network of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, and a further exploration on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been identified there to date.

Remarkably, Silwood Park is also home to several long-term field research endeavors, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more renowned projects carried out on-site.

Life as a student at Silwood Park

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolutionary projects. Most of us actively engage in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples encompass:

Chicken Club – looking after the chickens raised behind our student accommodations

Book Club – frequently discussing intriguing books

Gardening Club – overseeing the allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – arranging nature walks and conservation initiatives for students at Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also get involved in activities organized by clubs in South Kensington!

Casually, we have clubs participating in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), based either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.

Apart from club activities and classes, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and facilitates such events to maintain a lively and engaging student atmosphere! Recently, we’ve hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, and our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, where everyone made dumplings and couplets to ring in a new lunar year. We’ve also celebrated events from around the globe (like Carnival) with community-organized parties or simply thrown parties for the enjoyment of it.

My favorite event on campus is the weekly pub quiz, coordinated by our student community. It has become a Silwood tradition that the losers of the pub quiz organize the next one, and I can proudly boast the highest number of pub quizzes set this year. Despite my lack of knowledge in general trivia leading to frequent losses, there’s always great fun with wonderful company and a good pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my home away from home

Although it’s a 30-minute walk from the lively energy of civilization (i.e., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or unexciting. In addition to the multitude of events and activities, we have a friendly and inclusive community of students from various parts of the world. We all cherish nature, our stunning campus landscapes, and, most importantly, each other’s presence. We form a close-knit community that enjoys stargazing in the winter chill on the open field adjacent to our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our windows, and

Authored by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet with Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When many Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a vibrant, enchanting, and verdant campus bustling with wildlife and plant life that is rarely found at other locations such as South Kensington or White City.
