In numerous respects, they are correct – and every portrayal of Silwood Park is spot on!

As a member of this lesser-known enclave at Imperial, I wish to emphasize the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus situated in Ascot, Berkshire.

Introducing Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor laboratory, encompassing 77 hectares and featuring habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” woodland, and open fields. A quick look on iNaturalist, an app dedicated to mapping and sharing biodiversity observations globally within a network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, and an additional search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been noted to date.

Interestingly, Silwood Park also hosts numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the better-known studies conducted there.

Student life at Silwood Park

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students with interests in ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us participate in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:

Chicken Club – responsible for caring for the chickens raised behind the residence halls

Book Club – which meets regularly to discuss literature from their reading lists

Gardening Club – managing the allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – coordinating nature walks and conservation-related activities for students at Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us are also engaged members who actively partake in the events of clubs located in South Kensington!

Additionally, there are informal clubs centered around sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), which take place either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) at our campus or the indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

Alongside club activities and classes, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates these activities to guarantee a lively and enjoyable student life! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community came together to share languages and cultures over several weeks, and we also celebrated Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year by making dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We’ve had community-organized celebrations honoring festivities from around the globe (such as Carnival), or parties simply for the joy of gathering.

However, my favorite event on campus has to be the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It’s a part of Silwood culture that those who lose the pub quiz must organize the next one, and I can proudly claim the highest number of pub quizzes set this year. Despite frequently losing pub quizzes due to my poor general trivia knowledge, there’s always great enjoyment to be found in the company of friends and a good pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my second home

Even though it’s a 30-minute stroll from the lively buzz of civilization (like the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt monotonous or deficient. Besides the multitude of events and activities, we enjoy a warm and inviting community comprising students from across the globe. We all share a love for nature, cherish our beautiful campus grounds, and most importantly, enjoy each other’s company. We’re a close-knit community that takes pleasure in

Authored by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet with Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When many Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a vibrant, enigmatic, and green campus bustling with wildlife and plants not typically found at other locations such as South Kensington or White City.
