In many ways, they are correct—every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!

As a member of this lesser-known Imperial community, I wish to shed light on the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.

Welcome to Silwood Park

Silwood Park functions as Imperial’s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and encompassing habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and expansive grasslands. A brief search on iNaturalist, an app designed for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations around the world among naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Furthermore, eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been documented on campus thus far.

Notably, Silwood Park is home to numerous long-term field research projects, including the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, two prominent initiatives that take place on-site.

Experiencing Student Life at Silwood Park

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students dedicated to ecology, conservation, and evolution projects. Many of us engage in various clubs based at Silwood Park, including:

Chicken Club – tending to chickens raised behind our residence halls

Book Club – frequently discussing books from their reading list

Gardening Club – overseeing allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – coordinating nature walks and conservation efforts for Silwood Park students.

As part of the wider Imperial student body, many of us also join and actively engage in clubs located in South Kensington!

Casually, we have sports clubs for badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my favorite!), held either at the campus multi-use games arena (MUGA) or indoor sports venues in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.

Aside from club activities and classes, a variety of community-led events take place on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates these activities, ensuring a lively and engaging student life! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks. We also celebrated Chinese New Year by making dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. Additionally, we’ve had community-organized gatherings celebrating global events (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of socializing.

My favorite on-campus event is the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It’s a Silwood tradition that the quiz losers prepare the next one, and I proudly hold the record for the highest number of quizzes set this year. Despite my repeated losses due to my lack of general trivia knowledge, there’s always enjoyment in good company and a pint of beer.

Silwood Park: My Home Away from Home

Though situated a 30-minute walk from civilization (such as the train station and nearest village), life at Silwood Park never feels dull or insufficient. Alongside countless events and activities, we have a friendly, inviting community of students from various corners of the globe. We all cherish nature, our stunning campus, and, importantly, each other’s companionship. We’re a tight-knit group that revels in stargazing during the winter chill on the open field next to our bar, observing birds and mammals visiting our windows, and spending time with fellow nature lovers.

Most evenings, I cook with my dear friend from India, who shares my passion for Asian cuisine and birdwatching. We’re often joined by friends residing a short walk away in neighboring residence halls. After dinner, we typically play board games or watch movies together.
