In numerous respects, they are correct – every depiction of Silwood Park is true!

As a member of this lesser-known faction at Imperial, I aim to shed light on the student life, activities, and community present at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.

A brief introduction to Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and encompassing ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and expansive grasslands. Conducting a simple search on iNaturalist, an application aimed at mapping and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide with a network of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. An additional search on eBird reveals that 111 bird species have been documented so far on campus.

Additionally, Silwood Park is the location for numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more prominent studies undertaken on-site.

Life as a student at Silwood Park

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students passionate about ecology, conservation, and evolution studies. Many of us engage in various clubs based at Silwood Park, with notable examples including:

Chicken Club – tending to the chickens that are raised behind our residences

Book Club – regularly convening to chat about interesting reads

Gardening Club – overseeing the allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – organizing nature walks and conservation-related activities for students at Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us also partake in activities from clubs based in South Kensington!

In an informal setting, we have clubs participating in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), utilizing either the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or indoor sports facilities in neighboring towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

Beyond club activities and classes, we have numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park features its dedicated student council that organizes and facilitates such events to maintain a lively and engaging student life! In recent months, we’ve hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community gathered to share languages and cultures over several weeks, and our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, where everyone participated in making dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We’ve also had community-organized parties celebrating global events (like Carnival) or parties arranged simply for the joy of gathering.

My favorite event on campus, however, has to be the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It has become part of Silwood culture that the losers of the pub quiz are responsible for organizing the next one, and I can proudly state that I hold the record for the most pub quizzes set this year. Despite failing numerous pub quizzes due to my inadequate general trivia knowledge, there’s always great enjoyment to be found among good friends with a nice pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my second home

Even though it’s a 30-minute walk from the lively excitement of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or insufficient. Beyond the countless events and activities, we enjoy a friendly and inviting community of students from across the globe. We all cherish nature, our stunning campus grounds, and, most importantly, each other’s company. We are a closely-knit community that relishes stargazing in the winter chill on the open field beside our bar.

Authored by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet with Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they think of a verdant, enchanting, and green campus brimming with flora and fauna not typically found at other locations like South Kensington or White City.
