In many respects, they are correct—each portrayal of Silwood Park is true!

As a representative of this lesser-known enclave at Imperial, I wish to showcase the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.

An overview of Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor research hub, covering 77 hectares and incorporating environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” woodland, and expansive grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an app designed for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide with an online community of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Moreover, a search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been documented on campus to date.

Interestingly, Silwood Park is also the venue for numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more prominent studies conducted here.

Student life at Silwood Park

The campus primarily caters to postgraduate students focused on projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Most of us belong to various clubs based at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:

Chicken Club – responsible for caring for the chickens raised behind our halls of residence

Book Club – who meet regularly to discuss books of interest

Gardening Club – responsible for managing the allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – who arrange nature walks and conservation-related activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in activities of clubs located in South Kensington!

Informally, we boast clubs that involve sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

Beyond club activities and classes, we have numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates such activities to ensure a lively and engaging student life! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community gathered to exchange languages and cultures over several weeks. We also celebrated our annual Chinese New Year event at the beginning of the year, where everyone made dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. Additionally, we have community-hosted parties celebrating global occasions (like Carnival) or gatherings simply for the joy of festivities.

My favorite campus occasion, however, must be the weekly pub quiz organized by our student community. It is part of Silwood culture that the losers of the pub quiz are tasked with organizing the next one, and I can proudly state I have set the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Although I have lost many pub quizzes due to my lacking general knowledge, there’s always a great time to be had with wonderful company and a good pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my second home

Despite being a 30-minute walk from the bustling pulse of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or lacking. Along with a plethora of events and activities, we share a friendly and inviting community made up of students from around the globe. We all have a passion for nature, love our stunning campus grounds, and, most importantly, appreciate each other’s presence. We’re a close community that enjoys stargazing in the chilly winter evenings on the

Authored by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet specializing in Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a vibrant, enigmatic, and green campus alive with wildlife and vegetation that are rarely found at other locations such as South Kensington or White City.
