In many respects, they’re correct – every depiction of Silwood Park is accurate!

As a spokesperson for this lesser-known community within Imperial, I’d like to shed light on the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.

Introducing Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and encompassing habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and expansive meadows. A simple inquiry on iNaturalist, an app where users can track and share biodiversity observations worldwide within an online community of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, while a further check on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been spotted here so far.

Notably, Silwood Park is also the venue for numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more renowned studies carried out on-site.

Student Experience at Silwood Park

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students keen on projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us participate in several clubs based at Silwood Park. Some notable examples include:

Chicken Club – who care for the chickens raised behind our residence halls

Book Club – who meet regularly to discuss their reading list selections

Gardening Club – who oversee the allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – who organize nature hikes and conservation-focused events for students on Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us are also members and actively join events hosted by clubs in South Kensington!

Casually, we also have clubs that participate in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), which take place either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

Apart from club activities and classes, we have numerous community-driven events that occur on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates these events to ensure a lively and engaging student life! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our largely international community came together to exchange languages and cultures over several weeks, and we celebrated our annual Chinese New Year event at the beginning of the year, where everyone united to prepare dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We’ve also organized community parties celebrating various global festivities (such as Carnival), or simply parties hosted for the joy of celebration.

However, my favorite campus event is undoubtedly the weekly pub quiz, coordinated by our student community. It’s a Silwood tradition that the losing teams of the pub quiz are responsible for organizing the next one, and I can proudly claim the record for the most pub quizzes set this year. Despite losing many pub quizzes due to my limited general trivia knowledge, there’s always great enjoyment in the company of friends and a good pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my second home

Although situated a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or insufficient. In addition to the countless events and activities, we enjoy a friendly and inviting community made up of students from all corners of the globe. All of us cherish

Authored by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet with Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When the majority of Imperial students consider Silwood Park, they picture a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus rich with wildlife and flora rarely found at other locations like South Kensington or White City.
