In numerous respects, they are correct – every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!

As a voice for this lesser-known segment of the Imperial community, I wish to shed light on the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.

A glimpse into Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and encompassing ecosystems including freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” woodland, and open grasslands. A quick inquiry on iNaturalist, a platform for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations globally among a network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, while further exploration on eBird shows that 111 bird species have been identified to date.

Remarkably, Silwood Park is also the venue for many extensive field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more notable efforts conducted on the premises.

Life as a student at Silwood Park

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students with interests in ecology, conservation, and evolution projects. Many of us engage in various clubs situated at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:

Chicken Club – taking care of the chickens raised behind our accommodation

Book Club – regularly engaging in discussions about interesting books

Gardening Club – overseeing the allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – organizing nature walks and conservation events for students on Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student body, a lot of us also get involved in the activities of clubs based in South Kensington!

Informally, we have clubs that participate in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), using either the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

Besides club activities and educational sessions, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates these activities, ensuring we maintain a lively and engaging student life! Recently, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community exchanged languages and cultures over several weeks, and we also celebrated Chinese New Year at the start of the year, making dumplings and couplets to ring in the new lunar year. Additionally, we’ve hosted community-organized parties commemorating events from all over the globe (such as Carnival) or gatherings simply for the sake of celebration.

However, my favorite event on campus has to be the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It’s part of Silwood culture that the losing team from the pub quiz creates the next one, and I can proudly assert the highest count of pub quizzes hosted this year. Despite my frequent defeats in various pub quizzes due to my limited general knowledge, it’s always a good time filled with great company and a refreshing pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my second home

Even though it’s a 30-minute walk from the bustling atmosphere of civilization (i.e., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or unexciting. Along with a multitude of events and activities, we’ve fostered a friendly and inclusive community of students from all corners of the globe. We all cherish nature, our stunning campus grounds, and, above all, each other’s friendship. We’re a close-knit group that loves stargazing in the chilly winter on the open field beside our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our windows, and enjoying time with fellow nature enthusiasts.

Authored by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet with Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a verdant, enchanting, and green campus brimming with wildlife and plants rarely encountered on other campuses such as South Kensington or White City.
