In many respects, they are correct – every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!

As an ambassador of this lesser-known community within Imperial, I wish to emphasize the student experience, activities, and camaraderie at our natural parkland campus situated in Ascot, Berkshire.

Welcome to Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor research facility, encompassing 77 hectares and showcasing habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” woodland, and expansive grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an application that allows users to map and share biodiversity observations worldwide in a social network of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, while further inquiries on eBird indicate that 111 bird species have been observed so far.

Moreover, Silwood Park is the backdrop for numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more prominent studies undertaken on-site.

Life as a Student at Silwood Park

The campus primarily hosts postgraduate students engaged in projects focused on ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us are involved in several clubs located at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:

Chicken Club – responsible for caring for the chickens located behind our residence halls

Book Club – who meet regularly to discuss various titles of interest on their reading lists

Gardening Club – overseeing the allotments within our community garden

Conservation Club – organizing nature walks and conservation-themed activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us also engage in events hosted by clubs in South Kensington!

Additionally, we informally have clubs that partake in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), utilizing either the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or the indoor sports facilities located in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.

Beyond club activities and classes, we have numerous community-led events taking place on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and manages these events, contributing to a lively and dynamic student experience! Recently, we hosted a Silwood language exchange, bringing together our largely international community to share languages and cultures over several weeks, and we celebrated our annual Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, where everyone gathered to make dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We’ve also had community-driven parties celebrating global events (like Carnival), or gatherings simply for the joy of celebrating.

My absolute favorite event on campus has to be the weekly pub quiz organized by our student community. It’s a tradition at Silwood that the losing team of the pub quiz has to host the next one, and I can confidently claim the title for the most quizzes set this year. Despite my many losses in pub quizzes due to my limited knowledge of general trivia, there’s always laughter and good times to be had with great company and a nice pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my second home

Even though it’s a 30-minute stroll from the lively buzz of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt tedious or unexciting. In addition to the many events and activities, we have a friendly and inclusive community made up of students from around the globe.
