In many respects, they are correct – every representation of Silwood Park is truthful!

As an advocate for this less prominent community at Imperial, I wish to emphasize the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.

A glimpse into Silwood Park

Silwood Park is Imperial’s open-air laboratory, covering 77 hectares and featuring ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and open grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an application for tracking and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide with an online network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, and a further inquiry on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been noted thus far.

More intriguingly, Silwood Park serves as the location for numerous long-term field research projects, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more recognized initiatives conducted on-site.

Life of a student at Silwood Park

The campus mainly hosts postgraduate students who are engaged in projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Most of us belong to various clubs based at Silwood Park. Some notable ones include:

Chicken Club – responsible for caring for the chickens that are raised behind our residential halls

Book Club – who meet frequently to discuss their reading list of books

Gardening Club – managing the allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – who arrange nature walks and conservation-driven activities for students at Silwood Park Campus.

Being part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in activities of clubs based in South Kensington!

Informally, we have clubs that participate in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), based either in the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or within indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

Alongside club activities and lectures, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and facilitates these activities, ensuring an exciting and vibrant student life! Recently, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our primarily international community came together to share languages and cultures over a few weeks, and we celebrated our annual Chinese New Year at the start of the year, where everyone joined in making dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We’ve also organized community parties to celebrate various global festivities (such as Carnival), or gatherings just for the sake of having a good time.

However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It’s a part of Silwood culture that the teams who lose the pub quiz have to host the next one, and I can proudly stake the claim for the highest number of pub quizzes set this year. Despite my continuous losses due to my inadequate trivia knowledge, there’s always fun to be had with good company and a nice pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my second home

Even though it’s situated a 30-minute walk from the lively energy of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt boring or insufficient. Beyond the array of events and activities, we have a warm and friendly community made up of students from around the globe. We all share a passion for nature and our stunning campus.

Authored by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet specializing in Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus filled with wildlife and plant life that are rarely encountered on other campuses such as South Kensington or White City.
