In many respects, they are correct – each portrayal of Silwood Park holds true!

As a member of this lesser-known Imperial community, I wish to shed light on the student experience, activities, and community within our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.

Introducing Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor laboratory, covering an area of 77 hectares and showcasing habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and expansive grasslands. A brief search on iNaturalist, an application dedicated to cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide amongst a community of naturalists, uncovers that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, while an additional query on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been noted to date.

Interestingly, Silwood Park is home to numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two prominent projects conducted on-site.

Life as a student at Silwood Park

The campus predominantly accommodates postgraduate students with interests in ecology, conservation, and evolutionary studies. Many of us engage actively in various clubs located at Silwood Park. Examples worth noting include:

Chicken Club – tending to chickens reared behind our residences

Book Club – engaging in regular discussions about intriguing literature

Gardening Club – overseeing the allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – arranging nature walks and conservation initiatives for students on Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in activities organized by clubs based in South Kensington!

Informally, we participate in clubs that facilitate sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (which happens to be my personal favorite!), either utilizing the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

In addition to club activities and classes, there are numerous community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and coordinates such activities to foster a lively and stimulating student experience! Recently, we’ve held the Silwood language exchange, wherein our predominantly international community shared various languages and cultures over several weeks, along with our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, featuring dumpling-making and couplet crafting to welcome the new lunar year. We’ve also enjoyed community-themed parties celebrating global occasions (like Carnival) or simply gathering for the joy of festivities.

My personal favorite event on campus, however, is the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It has become part of Silwood culture that those who lose the pub quiz must set up the next one, and I can proudly state that I hold the record for the most pub quizzes arranged this year. Despite losing many pub quizzes due to my lacking general knowledge, the experience is always filled with laughter, great companions, and a refreshing pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my second home

Although it’s a 30-minute stroll from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt ordinary or unexciting. In addition to various events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community of students from all corners of the globe. We cherish nature, our stunning campus surroundings, and, most importantly, each other’s company. We’re a tight-knit community that relishes stargazing under the winter sky in the open field next to our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our windows, and spending moments with fellow nature enthusiasts.

Most evenings, I

Authored by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet with Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus bustling with wildlife and flora seldom encountered at other campuses like South Kensington or White City.
