In many respects, they are correct – each depiction of Silwood Park holds true!

As a spokesperson for this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I wish to emphasize the student life, activities, and community present at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.

Overview of Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and encompassing environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” woodland, and expansive grasslands. A straightforward search on iNaturalist, a platform for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations globally within an online community of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of flora, fauna, and fungi have been recorded on campus, while an additional inquiry on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been noted on campus to date.

Notably, Silwood Park is also home to numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more prominent studies conducted on-site.

Life as a Student at Silwood Park

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students with interests in ecology, conservation, and evolutionary studies. Many of us actively engage in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Here are some notable examples:

Chicken Club – dedicated to the care of the chickens raised behind our residence halls

Book Club – holds regular meetings to discuss intriguing books from their reading lists

Gardening Club – oversees the allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – organizes nature walks and activities centered around conservation for students on Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us also take part in activities organized by clubs based in South Kensington!

Informally, we also take part in sports clubs such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either on the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

Besides club activities and classes, we have numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park features its own student council that organizes and facilitates these events, ensuring an energetic and enjoyable student life! In recent months, we organized the Silwood language exchange, where our mainly international community collaborated to share languages and cultures over a few weeks, alongside our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the start of the year, where everyone united to make dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. Additionally, we’ve hosted community-organized gatherings celebrating global events (such as Carnival) or simply parties held for the joy of socializing.

However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, orchestrated by our student community. It is part of Silwood culture that those who lose the pub quiz must organize the next one, and I can proudly claim the title for the highest number of pub quizzes arranged this year. Despite losing many pub quizzes due to my lack of trivia knowledge, there’s always great enjoyment to be found in good company over a fine pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my second home

Even though it’s a 30-minute walk from the lively pulse of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never been monotonous or devoid of excitement. Alongside the myriad of events and activities, we benefit from a friendly and inviting community made up of students from across the globe. All of us appreciate nature, cherish our lovely campus grounds, and, more importantly,

Authored by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet specializing in Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a vibrant, enchanting, and verdant campus brimming with wildlife and plants rarely found at other campuses like South Kensington or White City.
