In many ways, their perceptions are accurate—each vision of Silwood Park is indeed valid!

As a member of this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I seek to draw attention to the student experience, activities, and community that thrive at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.

Meet Silwood Park

Silwood Park functions as Imperial’s outdoor research facility, covering an area of 77 hectares and encompassing ecosystems like freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” woodland, and open fields. A brief investigation on iNaturalist, an app designed for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations with a community of naturalists globally, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Furthermore, a search on eBird shows that 111 species of birds have been noted on site thus far.

Notably, Silwood Park also serves as the venue for several long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the most recognized projects undertaken here.

Life as a Student at Silwood Park

The campus mainly welcomes postgraduate students keen on projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us engage in diverse clubs based at Silwood Park. Some notable mentions are:

Chicken Club – taking care of the chickens housed behind our dormitories

Book Club – meeting regularly to discuss selected readings

Gardening Club – overseeing the plots in our community garden

Conservation Club – arranging nature walks and conservation initiatives for students at Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also take part in activities organized by clubs located in South Kensington!

Informally, we have clubs that engage in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), utilizing either the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or indoor sports facilities in nearby areas like Bracknell or Ascot.

Apart from club activities and academic lessons, we host numerous community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and coordinates such activities, fostering a dynamic and lively student life! Recently, we organized the Silwood language exchange, where our international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, and we celebrated the Chinese New Year with dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. We’ve also had community-hosted parties celebrating global festivities (such as Carnival) or simply for the joy of social gatherings.

My favorite event on campus is the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It’s a Silwood tradition that those who lose the quiz prepare the next one, and I can proudly assert that I have the highest number of quizzes organized this year. Even though I’ve lost at many quizzes due to my poor general trivia knowledge, there’s always enjoyment to be found in good company and a pint of beer.

Silwood Park: My Second Home

Even though it’s a 30-minute walk away from the lively essence of civilization (such as the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or unfulfilling. Along with a variety of events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community of students from across the globe. We all appreciate nature, value our stunning campus grounds, and, importantly, take pleasure in one another’s company. We are a tightly-knit community that enjoys stargazing in the chilly winter air on the open field next to our bar, observing birds and mammals at our windows, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.

Most evenings, I prepare meals with my dear

Written by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet with Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When students at Imperial picture Silwood Park, they frequently imagine a lush, enigmatic, and green campus full of distinctive flora and fauna, unlike the environments found at other campuses such as South Kensington or White City.
