In many respects, they are correct – every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!

As a member of this lesser-known faction at Imperial, I wish to emphasize the student experience, activities, and community present at our nature-rich campus in Ascot, Berkshire.

Introducing Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor research center, covering 77 hectares and incorporating ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” woodland, and expansive meadows. A brief inquiry on iNaturalist, an app designed for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations with naturalists worldwide, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, with an additional search on eBird revealing 111 bird species documented to date.

Furthermore, Silwood Park is home to numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more notable studies conducted on-site.

Life as a student at Silwood Park

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolutionary studies. Many of us engage in various clubs located at Silwood Park. Some significant examples include:

Chicken Club – taking care of the chickens raised behind our residence halls

Book Club – frequently discussing interesting literary works

Gardening Club – overseeing the community garden’s allotments

Conservation Club – organizing nature excursions and conservation efforts for students at Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the larger Imperial student body, numerous members also join in activities offered by clubs situated in South Kensington!

Casually, we have clubs participating in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), taking place either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

In addition to club activities and courses, we host various community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates these events to cultivate an engaging and dynamic student life! Recently, we’ve held the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community exchanged languages and cultures over several weeks, and our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, during which everyone participated in making dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We have also enjoyed community-organized gatherings celebrating global events (such as Carnival) or just parties held for the sheer joy of celebrating.

However, my favorite event on campus is the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It has become a Silwood tradition that the losers of the pub quiz are responsible for setting the next one, and I can proudly state I hold the record for the most pub quizzes arranged this year. Despite failing many pub quizzes due to my limited trivia knowledge, there’s always great fun with delightful company and a refreshing pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my home away from home

Even though it’s a 30-minute stroll from lively civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt repetitive or dull. In addition to the multitude of events and activities, we boast a hospitable and friendly community of students from around the globe. We all share a passion for nature, our splendid campus surroundings, and, most importantly, one another’s company. We form a tight-knit community that relishes stargazing in the winter chill on the field adjacent to our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our room windows, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.

Most evenings, I prepare

Authored by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet focusing on Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they think of a vibrant, intriguing, and verdant campus brimming with wildlife and vegetation rarely found at other locations like South Kensington or White City.
