In many ways, they are right—every mental image of Silwood Park is spot on!

As a member of this lesser-known Imperial community, my goal is to showcase the student experience, activities, and community within our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.

Welcome to Silwood Park

Silwood Park functions as Imperial’s outdoor research site, covering 77 hectares and comprising environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” woodland, and expansive grasslands. A brief lookup on iNaturalist, an application for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations globally with an online community of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Additionally, a search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been noted on campus to date.

Interestingly, Silwood Park also hosts various long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more recognized studies carried out on-site.

Student Life at Silwood Park

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students keen on ecology, conservation, and evolutionary studies. Many of us participate in several clubs located at Silwood Park. Some notable examples include:

Chicken Club – taking care of the chickens housed behind our residence halls

Book Club – gathering regularly to discuss interesting reads

Gardening Club – tending to the allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – arranging nature walks and conservation activities for Silwood Park students.

As part of the larger Imperial student body, many of us also engage in clubs based in South Kensington!

Casually, we partake in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), either at the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

Apart from club activities and lessons, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and supports these activities, fostering a lively and exciting student atmosphere! Recently, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, and we celebrated the Chinese New Year with dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. We’ve also enjoyed community-organized parties in honor of global festivals (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of celebrating.

My favorite campus event, however, is the weekly pub quiz arranged by our student community. It’s a Silwood tradition that the losers of the pub quiz create the next one, and I can proudly announce that I’ve set the highest number this year. Despite losing many quizzes due to my limited trivia knowledge, there’s always fun to be had with great friends and a pint of beer.

Silwood Park: My Second Home

Even though it’s a 30-minute walk from the bustling attractions of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt boring or lacking. In addition to the numerous events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community made up of students from across the globe. We share a love for nature, our stunning campus grounds, and, importantly, each other’s company. We’re a tightly-knit community that enjoys stargazing in the winter chill on the open field next to our bar, watching the birds and mammals that visit our windows, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.

Most evenings, I prepare meals with my dear friend from India, who shares my passion for cooking.

Written by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet specializing in Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation When many Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a lush, enchanting, and green campus filled with wildlife and plant life that is not typically found at other locations like South Kensington or White City.
