In many respects, they’re correct – every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!

As a representative of this lesser-known community at Imperial, I wish to showcase the student experience, activities, and camaraderie at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.

An overview of Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and encompassing habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and open fields. A quick search on iNaturalist, a platform for recording and sharing biodiversity observations globally with a network of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been cataloged on campus. An additional search on eBird indicates that 111 species of birds have been noted on campus to date.

Moreover, Silwood Park is home to numerous long-term field research initiatives, including the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, two renowned studies conducted on-site.

Student life at Silwood Park

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolution disciplines. Many of us belong to various clubs based at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:

Chicken Club – tending to the chickens raised behind our residence halls

Book Club – meeting regularly to chat about interesting reads

Gardening Club – overseeing the allotments within our community garden

Conservation Club – arranging nature walks and conservation-oriented activities for Silwood Park students.

As part of the larger Imperial student body, many of us also engage in clubs based in South Kensington!

Informally, we participate in sports clubs for badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), utilizing either the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or sports facilities in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.

In addition to club activities and classes, we host a variety of community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and supports such events, fostering a vibrant and dynamic student life! Recently, we enjoyed the Silwood language exchange, where our largely international student body shared languages and cultures over several weeks, and our annual Chinese New Year celebration, where everyone crafted dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. We’ve also had community-organized gatherings celebrating global occasions (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of socializing.

My favorite campus event, however, is the weekly pub quiz arranged by our student community. It’s part of Silwood tradition that the quiz losers organize the next one, and I can proudly say I’ve set the most pub quizzes this year. Although I’ve lost many quizzes due to my limited trivia knowledge, there’s always great enjoyment with delightful company and a good pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my second home

Even though it’s a 30-minute stroll from the lively essence of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or wanting. Apart from the multitude of events and activities, we enjoy a friendly and inviting community of students from various corners of the world. We all cherish nature, our stunning campus grounds, and, most importantly, each other’s companionship. We’re a tight-knit community that loves stargazing in the winter chill on the open field next to our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our window views, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.

Most evenings, I prepare meals with my dear friend from India, who shares my passion for Asian cuisine and birdwatching.
