In many ways, they are right – every depiction of Silwood Park is true!

As a representative of this lesser-known segment of the Imperial community, I’d like to showcase the student life, activities, and camaraderie at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.

A glimpse into Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor research center, encompassing 77 hectares and featuring ecosystems like freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” woodland, and expansive meadows. A simple inquiry on iNaturalist, an app designed for cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide with an online network of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, while an additional search on eBird reveals that 111 bird species have been identified to date.

More fascinatingly, Silwood Park is also the location for numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more renowned endeavors conducted here.

Student life at Silwood Park

The campus predominantly accommodates postgraduate students with interests in projects linked to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us are active members of various clubs based in Silwood Park. Some notable examples are:

Chicken Club – tending to the chickens raised behind our dormitories

Book Club – meeting regularly to discuss compelling literature

Gardening Club – overseeing the plots in our community garden

Conservation Club – arranging nature excursions and conservation efforts for students at Silwood Park Campus.

As members of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in activities of clubs located in South Kensington!

Informally, we have groups participating in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my absolute favorite!), which take place either on the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in neighboring towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

Alongside club activities and classes, we host numerous community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and manages these activities, promoting a lively and exhilarating student experience! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community congregated to share languages and cultures over several weeks, and we also celebrated the annual Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, creating dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. We’ve also hosted community-organized gatherings celebrating worldwide events (like Carnival), or simply gatherings for the joy of socializing.

However, my favorite campus activity undoubtedly has to be the weekly pub quiz, coordinated by our student community. It’s a Silwood tradition that the losers of the pub quiz are responsible for organizing the next one, and I can proudly assert that I hold the record for the most pub quizzes set this year. Despite frequently losing pub quizzes due to my limited trivia knowledge, there’s always an enjoyable time to be had with great company and a nice pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my sanctuary away from home

Even though it’s a 30-minute stroll from the lively buzz of civilization (e.g., the train station and the closest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or deficient. In addition to a plethora of events and initiatives, we enjoy a warm and inviting community made up of students from across the globe. We all share a passion for nature, our stunning campus grounds, and, more importantly, each other’s fellowship. We’re a tight-knit group that enjoys stargazing in the winter chill on the open field adjacent to our bar, observing the birds and

Authored by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet with Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they think of a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus brimming with wildlife and plants not frequently found on other campuses such as South Kensington or White City.
