In numerous respects, they are correct – every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!

As a voice for this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I wish to shed light on the student experience, activities, and community within our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.

An overview of Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and showcasing environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” woodland, and expansive grasslands. A brief search on iNaturalist, an application for tracking and sharing biodiversity observations globally within a network of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Furthermore, a review on eBird reveals that 111 species of birds have been identified on campus thus far.

More intriguingly, Silwood Park accommodates numerous long-term field research endeavors, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the better-known initiatives carried out on-site.

Student experience at Silwood Park

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate scholars focused on ecology, conservation, and evolutionary studies. Most of us are actively engaged in various clubs located at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:

Chicken Club – overseeing the care of the chickens raised behind our residence halls

Book Club – engaging in regular discussions about books of interest from their reading list

Gardening Club – overseeing the allotments in our communal garden

Conservation Club – organizing nature walks and conservation initiatives for students on Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also take part in activities organized by clubs based in South Kensington!

Casually, we have sports clubs such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), located either on the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports halls in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

In addition to club activities and classes, we host numerous community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and facilitates activities to guarantee a lively and engaging student life! Recently, we enjoyed the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community exchanged languages and cultures over several weeks, along with our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the year’s beginning, where everyone crafted dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. We’ve also hosted community-organized parties celebrating global festivities (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of having fun.

My favorite event on campus, however, must be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It’s a part of Silwood culture that the losers of the pub quiz arrange the next one, and I can proudly state that I’ve set the most pub quizzes this year. Despite a string of losses in the pub quizzes due to my limited general trivia knowledge, there’s always a great time to be had with delightful company and a nice pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my sanctuary away from home

Even though it’s a 30-minute stroll from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or insufficient. In addition to various events and activities, we have a friendly and hospitable community of students from all corners of the globe. We all cherish nature, our stunning campus grounds, and, most importantly, each other’s companionship. We’re a close-knit group that relishes stargazing in the winter chill on the open field adjacent to our bar, observing the birds and animals that visit our room windows, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.

Authored by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet with Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When many Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a vibrant, enchanting, green campus alive with animals and plants rare at other locations like South Kensington or White City.
