In many respects, they’re correct – every picture imagined of Silwood Park holds true!

As a voice from this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I want to shed light on the student experience, activities, and community within our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.

Discovering Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and encompassing environments such as freshwater streams, ponds, an “ancient” woodland, and expansive meadows. A brief inquiry on iNaturalist, an application designed for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide within a network of naturalists, uncovers that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, and an additional search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been identified on campus to date.

Even more fascinating, Silwood Park hosts numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more well-known studies undertaken on-site.

Student Experience at Silwood Park

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students keen on projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Most of us engage in several organizations based at Silwood Park. Some notable clubs include:

Chicken Club – looking after the chickens raised behind our dormitories

Book Club – meeting regularly to discuss intriguing literature

Gardening Club – overseeing the allotments in our community garden

Conservation Club – organizing nature walks and conservation projects for students on Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also take part in activities from clubs based in South Kensington!

Casually, we have clubs that partake in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (which is my personal favorite!), held on the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

In addition to club activities and classes, we have plenty of community-led events on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and coordinates these events, fostering a lively and engaging student atmosphere! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community shared languages and cultures over a few weeks, and we also marked the Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, making dumplings and couplets to greet the new lunar year. Community-organized parties have also occurred, celebrating global festivities (such as Carnival) or simply for the joy of gathering.

However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It’s a Silwood tradition that the quiz losers are responsible for setting the next one, and I can proudly assert having set the most pub quizzes this year. Despite failing many pub quizzes due to my lackluster general trivia knowledge, there’s always great enjoyment to be found with wonderful company and a good pint of beer.

Silwood Park: My Second Home

Even though it’s a 30-minute stroll from the lively buzz of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), existence at Silwood Park has never felt dull or lacking. Besides the myriad of events and activities, we boast a friendly and inviting community composed of students from around the globe. We all share a passion for nature, our stunning campus grounds, and most importantly, relish each other’s company. We’re a close-knit group that enjoys stargazing in the chilly winter air in the open field next to our bar, observing the birds and

Written by Clarence (Singapore), MSc Living Planet with Ecology, Evolution and Conservation When the majority of Imperial students envision Silwood Park, they picture a vibrant, enigmatic, and verdant campus filled with wildlife and flora that aren’t often found at our other locations such as South Kensington or White City.
