When many Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus filled with wildlife and plants seldom found at other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are correct \u2013 each depiction of Silwood Park is true!<\/p>\n

As a spokesperson for this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I would like to emphasize the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

An overview of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and showcasing habitats such as freshwater streams, ponds, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and expansive meadows. A basic search on iNaturalist, an app for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations globally within a social network of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. A further inquiry on eBird uncovers that 111 bird species have been noted on campus so far.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, Silwood Park is the location of numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more prominent studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Student experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly hosts postgraduate students keen on projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us are involved in several clubs based at Silwood Park. Prominent examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 responsible for taking care of the chickens kept behind our residences<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 convening regularly to discuss interesting books<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the community garden’s allotments<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 coordinating nature walks and conservation-oriented activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in activities offered by clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we also have clubs that practice sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), taking place either on the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we have numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates these events to guarantee a lively and engaging student life! Recently, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community gathered to share languages and cultures over a few weeks, and we also celebrated our annual Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, where everyone prepared dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. Additionally, we\u2019ve hosted community-organized celebrations for events worldwide (like Carnival) or parties simply for the joy of gathering.<\/p>\n

    My favorite event on campus, however, has to be the weekly pub quiz organized by our student community. It\u2019s part of Silwood culture that the losers of the pub quiz must host the next one, and I can proudly say I\u2019ve set the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Despite my frequent losses due to my limited general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always great enjoyment to be found with good company and a nice pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or lacking. Alongside the many events and activities, we enjoy a warm and inviting community made up of students from across the globe. We all cherish nature, our stunning campus grounds, and, most importantly, each other\u2019s company. We\u2019re a closely-knit<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
