When many Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a vibrant, enigmatic, and green campus abundant with wildlife and plants rarely encountered at our other campuses like South Kensington or White City. In many ways, they\u2019re correct\u2014every depiction of Silwood Park is true!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known community at Imperial, I want to showcase the student life, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Presenting Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and featuring habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A brief search on iNaturalist, an app designed for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations globally among naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, while a further check on eBird lists 111 bird species noted to date.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Silwood Park accommodates numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more prominent studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Campus Life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly caters to postgraduate students engaged in ecology, conservation, and evolution projects. Most of us take part in various clubs that operate at Silwood Park. Prominent examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to the chickens raised behind our residential halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 frequently gathering to discuss interesting books<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 coordinating nature walks and conservation initiatives for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us also engage in the activities of clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have clubs that participate in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports halls in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates such events to cultivate a lively and exciting student environment! Recently, we\u2019ve held the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, and our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, where everyone gathered to make dumplings and couplets to welcome in the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also organized community parties celebrating global events (like Carnival) or simply parties for the joy of celebrations.<\/p>\n

    My favorite event on campus, however, must be the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It\u2019s part of Silwood culture that the quiz losers host the next one, and I can proudly say I hold the record for the most pub quizzes set this year. Despite losing many quizzes due to my limited general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always great fun with wonderful company and a good pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Second Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the lively areas of civilization (such as the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or lacking. In addition to the countless events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community of students from across the globe. We all share a love for nature, our beautiful campus grounds, and, most importantly, each other\u2019s company. We\u2019re a tightly-knit community that enjoys stargazing in the winter chill on the open field adjacent to our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our room windows, and<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
