When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a vibrant, enigmatic, and verdant campus rich with wildlife and vegetation seldom found at other locations such as South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they’re correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park is true!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known segment of the Imperial community, I would like to showcase the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s open-air laboratory, covering 77 hectares and featuring ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and expansive grasslands. A straightforward search on iNaturalist, an application for cataloging and sharing biodiversity sightings worldwide within an online community of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on the premises. A further exploration on eBird reveals that 111 bird species have been observed on campus to date.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park also hosts numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more prominent studies undertaken on-site.<\/p>\n

Student life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students keen on projects associated with ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us are engaged in various clubs established at Silwood Park. Key examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 caring for the chickens raised behind our residences<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 regularly convening to discuss interesting reads<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 tending to the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 organizing nature walks and conservation-focused activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the larger Imperial student body, many of us also get involved in activities offered by clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have groups participating in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Apart from club activities and classes, our campus hosts a variety of community-led events. Silwood Park features its very own student council that organizes and supports these activities, fostering a lively and engaging student atmosphere! Recently, we had the Silwood language exchange, where our largely international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, and our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, where everyone prepared dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We’ve also hosted community-organized celebrations of global events (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of celebrations.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, orchestrated by our student community. It’s a tradition at Silwood that the losing team of the quiz organizes the next one, and I can proudly assert that I have hosted the most pub quizzes this year. Despite facing numerous defeats due to my lack of general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always plenty of laughter with great company and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my home away from home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it’s situated a 30-minute stroll from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or lacking. Alongside the myriad of events and activities, we enjoy a friendly and inclusive community made up of students from across the globe. We all appreciate nature, cherish our stunning campus landscape, and most importantly, value each other\u2019s companionship. We\u2019re a close-knit group that relishes spending time stargazing in the winter chill on the open field next to<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
